A Conversation with Asmaa Nasraldin, Paralegal
In the latest feature of our Women in Law series, we speak with Asmaa Nasraldin, Paralegal in the firm’s Abu Dhabi office, about her path into the legal profession, the experiences that have shaped her career, and the perspectives she has gained along the way.
Could you briefly describe your current role and area of practice at the firm?
My role as a Paralegal involves managing client files throughout their lifecycle, starting from the initial receipt of a matter from an existing or prospective client. I coordinate with the relevant lawyers, ensure that all required documentation is complete and properly prepared, and follow up with clients until the matter is concluded.
My responsibilities also include assisting with legal research and drafting agreements and other legal documents, while maintaining accuracy, compliance and attention to detail throughout the process.
What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
Initially, I was planning to pursue a career in architecture and had been accepted into that major at university. However, during my high school years, specifically in Grade 11, I watched Legally Blonde. Yes, the movie! Surprisingly, it planted the seed that sparked my interest in law.
What started as curiosity grew into a passion for advocacy, problem-solving and the impact that law can have on people’s lives.
Can you share a key moment or experience that shaped your professional journey?
After passing the Sudanese Bar Exam and during my legal training, I had the opportunity to attend an exceptional court hearing with my supervising lawyer. That experience became a defining moment in my professional journey.
I learned the importance of understanding not only a lawyer’s rights and obligations, but also those of the judiciary. I came to appreciate how the role of the Bar and the authority of the Bench complement each other in the administration of justice.
A fair and effective legal system depends on mutual respect, professionalism and accountability between lawyers and judges. This experience reinforced my commitment to upholding professional ethics and respect for the justice system throughout my career.
What do you enjoy most about working in your area of practice?
I enjoy the unique perspective that working in law gives me on legal issues and everyday life. The law is present in almost every aspect of our daily lives, yet many people encounter it only through their legal rights and obligations. Working as a legal professional allows me to approach these matters from the perspective of an advocate, which has fundamentally changed the way I understand the role of law in society.
I also value the human aspect of my work. Working with clients and colleagues from diverse cultural and legal backgrounds is both professionally and personally enriching.
Have you faced any particular challenges during your career, and how did you overcome them?
One of the most significant challenges I have faced has been adapting to rapidly changing legal and professional environments. Working in contexts where laws, procedures and institutional priorities evolve quickly has required me to remain flexible while maintaining high professional and ethical standards.
I addressed this challenge by committing to continuous learning, seeking guidance from experienced colleagues, and investing time in understanding new legal frameworks and best practices.
I also learned the value of clear communication, collaboration and building strong professional relationships with colleagues and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
What skills or qualities do you believe are most important for success in the legal profession today?
I believe success in the legal profession requires a combination of strong legal knowledge, integrity, adaptability and effective communication.
It also requires the confidence and courage to express legal opinions respectfully.
What advice would you give to women considering a career in law?
My advice is very simple: if this is the path you are passionate about, pursue it with confidence.
The legal profession offers tremendous opportunities, and there is a place for women in every area of practice.
I believe women bring valuable perspectives to advocacy. Qualities such as empathy, resilience, attention to detail and strong communication enhance legal practice and contribute to the profession.
How do you maintain a balance between professional responsibilities and personal life?
I try to maintain balance by creating a clear separation between work and my personal life. When I leave the office, I make time for my interests and community activities.
Of course, there are times when work demands more attention, and that is part of the journey. For me, balance is about staying mindful and making time for what matters.
What does being part of a diverse legal team mean to you?
Being part of a diverse legal team means having the opportunity to learn from people with different perspectives, experiences and legal backgrounds.
Diversity strengthens legal practice by encouraging new ideas, challenging assumptions and leading to more balanced solutions.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your journey or experience in the legal field?
I am grateful for the ever-changing nature of the legal profession. Every case and legal issue brings new challenges, perspectives and opportunities to learn. This continuous evolution keeps me engaged, motivated and excited to continue growing as a legal professional.
